Maurizio Andolfi was a Professor of Psychology at La Sapienza-University of Rome, Director of the Accademia di Psicoterapia Familiare in Rome and Editor-in-Chief of the Italian family therapy journal: Terapia Familiare. In 1999 he was the winner of an American Association of Marital & Family Therapy award for Special Contribution to Marital and Family Therapy. In 2021, he was awarded ANZ AAFT Journal Award. Maurizio has published widely and written several books since he relocated to Perth, Australia many years ago.

Maurizio Andolfi shares the wisdom and profound knowledge he has gained over fifty years of personal and professional life experiences, and chronicles his learning from the giants of family therapy. This book highlights the deeply human experience of the healing process which is only possible when therapists are able to get rid of their professional mask in order to attune to the suffering brought to therapy by individuals and troubled families. The therapeutic project is the search for authenticity and mutual understanding, which becomes a reciprocal Gift of Truth when the inner self of the therapist encounters the self of the other, breaking the fences of social and conventional roles. Relational questioning, attentive listening, body language and movement are outlined as the main tools in therapy and the vehicle for knowledge and transformation in families. It describes the learning process for therapists to develop critical thinking skills and discover creativity and how to utilise their personal and professional resources fully in therapy. To reach this goal the acquisition of an inner supervisor enables a profound inner dialogue and a space for reflection that can help to unblock impasses and guide therapists in difficult therapeutic situations.

Since 2014, Maurizio has travelled to the Asia Pacific region, in particular Malaysia. He is the Honorary Consultant for the Andolfi Family Therapy Centre in Kuala Lumpur, named in his honour for his ongoing contribution to develop family therapist there. In 2021, the AFTC launched the Inaugural Graduate Diploma of Multi-generation Family Therapy – a 2-year part-time program.

I have been privileged to have been taught and influenced by his teaching and ideas since 2005 as well as my role as Coordinator for both the Diploma Program in Australia and Malaysia.
